Such a move would effectively block 7% of the world's crude oil supply. It would also cut off a critical maritime artery, impacting major oil exporters like Saudi Arabia, which had previously rerouted shipments through the Red Sea after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This alternative route had served as a crucial safeguard against a total collapse in global supply.

The Houthis have warned shipping companies that any vessel approaching Saudi ports will be considered a military target, signaling a potential maritime blockade. The consequences of a complete halt to traffic in the Red Sea are projected to be severe. Beyond increased shipping costs and the need for lengthy detours around Africa, analysts caution that a supply shock could drive up global inflation by an additional two percentage points.

Despite previous military operations by the U.S. aimed at degrading Houthi capabilities, the threat persists through drones, missiles, and harassment tactics.
