New German sign baffles drivers, leading to hefty fines for brief parking violations

A seemingly innocuous traffic sign introduced in Germany in 2020 is proving to be a costly source of confusion for many drivers, especially foreigners unfamiliar with its specific meaning. The sign, officially designated 1010-70, marks parking spaces reserved solely for car-sharing services.

The pictogram on the sign, depicting a car split in half and surrounded by four people, has led to various incorrect interpretations on social media. However, drivers heading to Germany are advised to memorize its true purpose, as ignoring it can result in substantial financial penalties. Parking a private vehicle in these designated spots without proper authorization not only guarantees a fine but also opens the possibility of the vehicle being towed.

A stark example of the consequences came from an administrative court ruling in Düsseldorf. A woman parked her car in a car-sharing spot for a mere eleven minutes. During this brief period, authorities registered the violation and summoned a tow truck. Although the woman returned and moved her vehicle before the tow truck arrived, preventing its physical removal, she still received a bill totaling 172.95 euros. This amount included charges for the tow truck's empty call-out and administrative fees.

This case highlights a critical detail: once the authorities issue an order and call for a tow truck, costs can be incurred even if the driver returns before the vehicle is impounded. The base fine for unauthorized parking in a car-sharing spot is 55 euros, regardless of whether other spaces are available or the parking duration is short. However, as this incident demonstrates, a few minutes of inattention can lead to a bill significantly exceeding the initial fine. The German automobile club ADAC also warns that vehicles illegally occupying these spots can be towed without delay, emphasizing that these spaces are strictly for professional car-sharing services with appropriate permits.
