New ice arena planned in Lithuania amid protests from football fans

The Klaipėda region in Lithuania is moving forward with plans to construct a new ice arena, a project estimated to cost around 15 million euros. The initiative aims to enhance access to ice sports for residents and promote activities like figure skating, ice hockey, and curling. The regional municipality has committed to funding at least 57% of the project's value, with the remainder sought from the state budget.

At this time, due to the small number of ice arenas in the Klaipėda region, there is nowhere to train athletes who love ice sports, and residents have no opportunity to try ice sports.

According to the project's explanatory note, the arena would accommodate several sports and include seating for 230 spectators. If regional politicians approve the plans and state funding is secured, the arena could be built between 2027 and 2029. The municipality would also need to ensure continued investment for at least five years post-opening.

The cost of establishing an ice arena and related infrastructure can reach about 15 million euros.

However, the proposal faces opposition from the Gargždai football fan group "Tigrų ekipa." They argue that the investment in an ice arena neglects the critical need for a football indoor facility for the local club, Banga. The group claims that hundreds of academy children and senior teams lack adequate training conditions during winter, leading to health issues and decreased participation. They are demanding that taxpayer money be allocated to address these pressing community needs rather than what they deem questionable projects.
