New Public Holiday in Paraguay: Constitution Day Moved to Monday, June 22

Paraguay is commemorating a new national holiday for the first time on June 20: Constitution Day. This date marks the anniversary of the National Constitution sanctioned in 1992, a foundational document established after the end of Alfredo Stroessner's dictatorship. To ensure the holiday receives due recognition and to foster patriotism and tourism, the government has officially moved the observance to Monday, June 22.

President Santiago Peña promulgated Decree No. 6.215, officially transferring the holiday. This creates the second long weekend of June for Paraguayans. The decision aims to prevent the inaugural celebration from being overlooked amidst the regular weekend routine, emphasizing the importance of valuing the laws that underpin Paraguayan democracy.

The 1992 Constitution is historically significant as it was the first in Paraguay to emerge from a truly free, participatory, and democratic process. Its implementation has allowed the country to experience an uninterrupted period of full respect for human rights and has incorporated high standards for the protection of individual liberties.
