New Spider-Man Film Achieves Second-Highest Opening Weekend in History

The latest Spider-Man film has swung into theaters with a blockbuster opening weekend, raking in $355 million in the United States and Canada. This massive debut makes it the second-highest-grossing opening weekend in history, according to Sony. The film, titled 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' is the fourth installment featuring Tom Holland and Zendaya in the iconic roles and is part of the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This impressive performance places the new Spider-Man movie just shy of the all-time record holder, 'Avengers: Endgame,' which debuted with $357 million in 2019. The previous Spider-Man film, 'No Way Home,' also a major MCU hit, secured the third spot with a $260 million opening in 2021. All three of these top-performing films are part of the MCU.

For comparison, Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey,' a major summer release, has grossed $359 million in two weeks, with an opening weekend of just over $123 million in North America. The highest-grossing film of the year in the US and Canada so far is 'Toy Story 5,' which has earned over $457 million to date. The film industry traditionally uses US and Canadian box office figures to measure success. Globally, 'Toy Story 5,' 'Michael,' and 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' have each surpassed $1 billion in ticket sales this year, while 'The Odyssey' has reached nearly $722 million worldwide.
