New Taipei City Clears Nine Tons of Waste from Pumping Stations Annually

New Taipei City's commitment to maintaining a robust and efficient wastewater system is evident in the diligent work carried out at its numerous pumping stations. The city's Water Resources Bureau reports that its operational teams annually clear an astonishing nine tons of solid waste and sludge from these critical facilities. This debris, often consisting of plastics, wet wipes, rags, and solidified grease, poses a significant threat to the operational integrity of the pumps, leading to frequent malfunctions and the potential for disruptive sewage backflows.

The bureau emphasizes that these pumping stations are indispensable nodes within the city's extensive sewer network, which spans over 2,600 kilometers and serves more than 71% of the population. Without the regular maintenance and clearing of these stations, the gravity-fed system would falter, especially in areas where terrain or distance necessitates pumping. The challenges faced by the clearing crews are considerable, often involving work in confined and unpleasant conditions to remove blockages that compromise the system's 24-hour operational capability.

Furthermore, the bureau highlights the role of businesses, particularly food service establishments, in contributing to the problem. Many fail to properly maintain their grease traps, allowing fats, oils, and grease to enter the sewage system, where they congeal into large masses. This exacerbates the clogging issue and increases the strain on the pumping equipment. The city is appealing to the public and businesses alike to exercise greater responsibility in waste disposal and management, underscoring that the smooth functioning of the wastewater system relies on collective effort and adherence to regulations.
