New Taipei City selects Shulin site for Mega Dome project

New Taipei City has finalized the location for its highly anticipated "Mega Dome" project, selecting the "Shulin Jiwu Peripheral Base" after a rigorous two-phase evaluation process involving 23 experts. This decision marks a significant step towards developing a major new urban hub in the greater Shulin region.

The chosen site will host a state-of-the-art, 50,000-seat multi-purpose stadium, designed to accommodate international sporting events, concerts, and exhibitions. Beyond the stadium, the development will feature a comprehensive mix of facilities, including a convention center, office spaces, a branded hotel, and commercial areas. This integrated approach aims to foster the overall growth of the area and solidify its position as New Taipei City's fourth major urban center.

The selection process involved evaluating six potential sites based on criteria such as site conditions, transportation, supporting facilities, environmental constraints, and external development potential. The Shulin Jiwu site ultimately received higher marks in the second phase of evaluation, which focused on environmental conditions, transportation, and sustainable development, assessed across 26 professional indicators.

City officials highlighted the advantages of the Shulin Jiwu base, noting its potential for acquiring approximately 9 hectares of contiguous land through land readjustment, which minimizes development uncertainties. Its location at the intersection of commercial, industrial, and residential zones provides a solid foundation for urban development. Furthermore, the site's proximity to the planned MRT Tucheng-Shulin Line (LG18 station) and its connectivity to the railway, Provincial Highway 65, and National Freeway 3 are expected to enhance accessibility and manage crowd flow during large events.

The project is projected to benefit from a stable consumer market, with an estimated population exceeding 2.6 million within a 30-minute radius over the next decade. This demographic outlook is expected to support the daily commercial operations of the large-scale venue, improving its financial viability. The New Taipei City government will now proceed with urban planning, development, and investment attraction processes, aiming to leverage the Mega Dome's construction to stimulate surrounding commerce, tourism, and urban renewal.
