New Ukrainian Army Commander Faces Russian Threat and Past Challenges

Mychailo Drapaty steps into the role of Ukraine's new army commander with the looming threat of a Russian offensive and a challenging past.

General Valerii Zaluzhny, the previous commander, commented on Drapaty's appointment, stating, "It will be difficult for the new commander, much harder than he imagines. But Mykhailo will certainly not be ashamed. A man of honor has no idols." This mention of shame likely refers to an incident in May of the previous year when Drapaty resigned as commander of ground forces. This followed a Russian missile strike on a training ground, which killed 12 soldiers and wounded 60. Drapaty took responsibility, feeling he had failed to enforce his own ban on open-air troop gatherings, a practice reminiscent of Soviet-era parades.

Drapaty, however, is also recognized for his decisive leadership and bravery. In May 2014, during the early stages of the conflict in Donbas, then-Major Drapaty led a daring charge to relieve besieged police headquarters in Mariupol. His armored personnel carrier famously breached a barricade, allowing his unit to engage Russian-backed separatists. Later, in August 2014, he conducted a remarkable 160-kilometer raid through Russian-occupied territory to extract over 260 soldiers and 30 armored vehicles from encirclement.

Currently, General Drapaty commands significant respect among soldiers, who believe he prioritizes their well-being. "He makes quick decisions and protects people. The army trusts him," wrote Kyrylo Budanov, head of the presidential administration. One soldier recalled an encounter where Drapaty, unrecognized at first, shared tea with guards before heading to the staff headquarters, highlighting his approachable nature. Despite his reputation, Russian authorities have issued an arrest warrant for him, though the specific reasons remain unclear.
