New Wildfire Near Spanish Border Burns 11,000 Hectares, Forcing 800 Evacuations

Spanish officials reported a new wildfire erupted near the western border with Portugal, rapidly consuming 11,000 hectares of land within 24 hours and prompting the emergency evacuation of 800 residents. The fire ignited Thursday in the municipality of Fermoselle, within the province of Zamora in the Castilla y León autonomous community.

The regional emergency response unit confirmed that 800 individuals were evacuated due to the immediate threat posed by the new fire. Spain's Military Emergencies Unit (UME) has been deployed to combat the blaze, which has been classified as a Level 2 fire, triggering additional support from the central government.

Raul de la Fuente, a senior firefighter official for the autonomous community, stated that the fire is spreading through a canyon and poses a threat to another village. Strong winds are anticipated, further complicating containment efforts. Zamora province is currently battling two other Level 2 fires.

This latest incident occurs amidst a severe wildfire season in Spain. The Castilla y León region, where Zamora is located, has already contended with what is reported as the largest wildfire in Spanish history, which scorched approximately 50,000 hectares near Ávila. The scale of these fires highlights the extreme conditions facing the region.
