Nigeria eyes record 22 gold medals at Commonwealth Games

Nigeria is heading to the Commonwealth Games with unprecedented ambition, setting its sights on a record-breaking medal haul. The National Sports Commission (NSC) has expressed strong confidence, projecting that Team Nigeria could snatch as many as 22 gold medals, surpassing even internal targets. This surge in optimism is not without basis, as it stems from significant structural changes within the nation's sports ecosystem, bolstered by the current administration's support.

Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, highlighted the positive impact of reforms under NSC chairman Shehu Dikko and the backing from President Bola Tinubu. These administrative and developmental improvements are seen as key to unlocking the athletes' full potential. The Elite Athletes Podium Finish initiative has set a baseline of 18 gold medals, but the prevailing sentiment is that this figure will be exceeded, reflecting a dynamic and forward-looking approach to sports development.

Notably, the women's contingent was responsible for all 12 gold medals, underscoring a powerful and growing force in Nigerian sports. As preparations for Glasgow intensify, the Nigerian camp is buzzing with expectations, aiming to build on past successes and set a new benchmark in Commonwealth Games history.
