Nigeria's APC Party Waves Primary Screening for President Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken a decisive step in clearing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the upcoming 2027 primaries by waiving the standard screening requirements. This move by the National Working Committee (NWC) signals strong party unity and confidence in the President's leadership, particularly in light of the overwhelming endorsement he has received from key stakeholders, including the Progressive Governors Forum and members of the National Assembly.

The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress, at its 188th meeting held today, May 6, 2026, resolved to waive, and has waived, screening requirements for His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and deemed him duly screened in accordance with the Constitution of the party for the purpose of participation in the upcoming primary elections.

According to a statement issued by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the decision is rooted in the APC's constitution, specifically Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv), which grant the NWC the authority to organize primaries and grant waivers in the party's best interest. The party views further physical screening for an incumbent president, who has already undergone and passed the process for the 2022 primaries, as unnecessary and redundant.

This decision was made pursuant to the powers conferred on the NWC under Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv) of the Constitution of the APC to organise and supervise the party’s primaries and, in special circumstances, grant waivers in the best interest of the party.

This waiver is seen within the party as a strategic move to consolidate support and focus on the general election campaign. By preemptively addressing the primary process, the APC aims to present a united front and avoid internal divisions. The purchase of the presidential expression of interest and nomination forms by a supporter further underscores the party's backing for Tinubu's re-election bid, setting the stage for what is expected to be a closely watched electoral cycle.

It further noted that, as the incumbent President and leader of the party, having been duly screened and cleared ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries, requiring his physical appearance before a screening committee at this time would be redundant and unnecessary.
