Nigeria's Vanguard newspaper marks 40 years with book launch featuring former head of state, police chief

Nigeria's media landscape is set to celebrate a significant milestone with the upcoming public presentation of "The Vanguard Chronology: 40 Years of Nigeria’s Leading Tabloid." The event, scheduled for Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at the Grandeur Event Centre in Lagos, will be headlined by distinguished figures including former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, and the current Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

Organized by the Vanguard Media Alumni Association, the presentation marks four decades of Vanguard newspaper's influence on journalism, national development, and public discourse in Nigeria. Pastor Eyobong Ita, Chairman of the Alumni Association, highlighted that the occasion will also pay tribute to the enduring legacy of Vanguard’s Founder and Publisher, Mr. Sam Amuka, who celebrated his 91st birthday on June 13, 2026.

The event is anticipated to draw a wide array of prominent personalities from government, the media, the business sector, and civil society, underscoring Vanguard's evolution from a bold tabloid into a respected voice in Nigeria. The chronology itself promises to chronicle the newspaper's journey, documenting pivotal national events, investigative pieces, and its role in capturing Nigeria's historical narrative.

General Babangida's expected presence is seen as an acknowledgment of the newspaper's contributions to national progress and the vital role of the media in fostering democracy. The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, is slated to deliver the keynote address on "Fighting Insecurity in Nigeria: The Need for Media Collaboration," emphasizing the critical link between media and national security.

Former Ogun State Governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, will chair the presentation, with former Editor of Punch Newspapers, Dr. Gbemiga Ogunleye, set to review the book. Pastor Ita described the chronology as both a historical record and a tribute to the many professionals who shaped Vanguard, expressing hope that it will inspire future generations of journalists.
