Nigerian Air Force Upgrades Rivers Runway, Apron to Boost Air Power

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has significantly bolstered its operational capabilities with the unveiling of a newly upgraded runway and military apron in Rivers State. The enhancement is expected to provide a substantial boost to Nigeria's air power and its national security architecture.

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, stated that the upgraded facilities will improve aircraft deployment, reduce turnaround times, enhance maintenance, and increase overall operational efficiency. This is particularly crucial for supporting ongoing security operations across the South-South region of Nigeria.

The project underscores the NAF's commitment to strengthening its infrastructure and capabilities to remain responsive, agile, and mission-ready. Air Marshal Aneke commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State for his active funding and support for the reconstruction, describing it as a commendable example of state-level contribution to national defense. The governor's role in the handover of an AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter to the NAF was also acknowledged.

These investments demonstrate a strong commitment to enhancing security within Rivers State and advancing Nigeria's broader national security objectives. Dependable aviation infrastructure is fundamental to effective military operations, and the reconstructed runway and apron are expected to increase operational readiness and expand the airport's mission support capacity.

Beyond security operations, the improved facilities will also strengthen the NAF's capacity for rapid humanitarian assistance and emergency response. This includes supporting medical evacuations, search-and-rescue missions, disaster relief, and rapid air transport during emergencies like floods and epidemics, reinforcing the NAF's role as a critical national response asset.
