Ousted Ukraine defence chief becomes adviser to Italian minister

Ukraine's former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who was dismissed in July amid reports of friction with military leadership, has taken on a new role as an adviser to Italy's Defense Minister Guido Crosetto. Fedorov announced his new position on Friday, six weeks after his sacking from the Ukrainian government.

Fedorov, known for his tech-savviness and 35 years of age, will serve as an "advisor on defence innovation." In this capacity, he aims to assist Italy in developing technologies for contemporary warfare, enhancing its defense sector, and adapting to evolving global security challenges. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto had reportedly offered Fedorov the position in July.

His dismissal from Ukraine's defense ministry had sparked rare wartime protests, with thousands calling for his reinstatement. Fedorov, a long-time ally of President Volodymyr Zelensky, had previously worked with the president since his term began in 2019. Relations between the two reportedly soured following Fedorov's dismissal.

Despite his new international role, Fedorov will continue to reside and work from Kyiv, according to his press office. The Italian defense ministry described the appointment as an "important opportunity" for Italy, particularly welcoming expertise in autonomous systems and air defense. There has been no immediate comment from the Ukrainian presidential administration regarding Fedorov's new role.
