Nigerian leaders urged to emulate Yar’Adua’s virtues of transparency and integrity

In Nigeria, the memory of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua continues to serve as a benchmark for ethical leadership, with calls for current leaders to emulate his virtues. At the third President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Leadership Award and Honour Night held in Abuja, prominent figures stressed the importance of his legacy.

Some leaders are born, while some develop leadership traits. Yar’Adua was a born leader. He lived an exemplary life worthy of emulation.

Professor Roland Otaru (SAN), the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Edo State, lauded Yar’Adua as a resilient leader who embodied the core values of Nigerian culture. He described Yar’Adua as a born leader whose exemplary life, characterized by a belief in national unity and tolerance, still resonates across the country. This emphasis on unity in diversity and religious tolerance is particularly significant in Nigeria's complex ethnic and religious landscape.

Yar’Adua believed in the unity of the country and promoted unity in diversity. He consistently preached religious tolerance among Nigeria’s ethnic groups. The legacy he left behind still resonates across the country.

Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, echoed these sentiments, portraying Yar’Adua as a dedicated servant-leader who was honest, simple, and humble—qualities he noted are rare among contemporary leaders. Ribadu drew parallels with the leadership of Murtala Mohammed, another Nigerian leader who initiated significant reforms during a brief tenure, suggesting that Nigeria has a history of impactful, albeit short-lived, leadership.

Dr. Phil Okonkwo, Managing Consultant of Lonvenza Specialist and Wellness Centre, further elaborated on Yar’Adua's leadership style, highlighting a rare convergence of theory and practice. He pointed to Yar’Adua's commitment to transparency, exemplified by his public asset declaration, and his preference for dialogue over conflict, which brought stability to the Niger Delta region. From a Nigerian perspective, these qualities are not just admirable but essential for navigating the nation's challenges and fostering genuine progress. The call to emulate Yar’Adua is a call for a return to principles that prioritize the common good over personal gain, a message that remains profoundly relevant.
