Nigerian Mission opens portal for fresh repatriation of South Africa returnees

Nigerians residing in South Africa who wish to return to their home country now have a dedicated online channel to initiate the process. The Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria has officially opened a voluntary return registration portal, signaling a continued effort by the Federal Government to facilitate repatriation.

The portal, which commenced operation on August 4, 2026, will remain accessible until midnight on August 12, 2026. This initiative is specifically designed for Nigerian nationals seeking voluntary repatriation. The High Commission assures that all information submitted through the portal will be treated with strict confidentiality and used exclusively for the purpose of processing applications.

The portal is intended solely for Nigerian nationals who are voluntarily seeking repatriation to Nigeria.

This development follows closely on the heels of a previous large-scale evacuation effort. Just weeks prior, the Nigerian government successfully repatriated 1,490 citizens from South Africa in seven separate batches. This earlier operation was prompted by reports of escalating xenophobic attacks that targeted foreign nationals, including a significant number of Nigerians.

While the registration process itself is free of charge, the High Commission emphasizes that successfully completing the online form does not automatically secure a spot on a repatriation flight. Applications will undergo a thorough review process, with placement determined by established procedures and the availability of resources and flight arrangements. The mission also strongly advises against congregating at its premises, reiterating that the entire registration procedure is to be conducted online.
