Nigerian Troops Launch Katsina Offensive After Death of Ex-Military Spokesman in Captivity

Nigerian Army troops have initiated a significant offensive operation in parts of Katsina State, responding to the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar. Abubakar, who previously served as the Director of Defence Information, died while in the custody of suspected bandits after being abducted along with his wife.

The military operation, designated "Operation CLEAN SWEEP III," commenced on Sunday in the Matazu Local Government Area and surrounding communities. Its primary objective is to target and neutralize terrorist and bandit groups believed to be active in the region.

The offensive comes just days after authorities confirmed Abubakar's death. He was abducted on May 30 along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Matazu. Security officials had previously stated that the retired general died in captivity due to complications from underlying health conditions.

Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, issued a statement on Monday. He explained that the operation aims to locate and neutralize those responsible for the abduction, dismantle criminal networks, and restore security to the affected communities.

"The operation was launched following the unfortunate incident that led to the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who was abducted alongside his wife by suspected terrorists and bandits in the area,” Danja stated. The military reports that troops have conducted aggressive patrols, raids, and clearance operations in identified criminal hideouts, including the Dikkawa Hills area, destroying structures used as terrorist bases.
