Nigerian Troops Rescue 18 Hostages, Arrest Two Suspected Terrorists

In a series of counter-terrorism operations across Zamfara State, Nigerian troops have successfully rescued 18 kidnapped individuals and apprehended two suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group. The operations, conducted on Monday, August 10, 2026, were a direct response to intelligence reports on terrorist activities and distress calls within the state.

One significant operation occurred on the outskirts of Sabon Gari village in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area. Responding to a distress call, troops engaged terrorists and managed to rescue 18 abducted persons, including Alhaji Aminu Dayau and his children. However, some captives were taken by the fleeing terrorists across a river before the troops could secure them. Military efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining victims and track the perpetrators.

In a separate intelligence-driven operation, troops arrested two Nigerien nationals identified as Abdul Rahman Bouye and Mohammed Jamilu. Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects were involved in terrorist activities in the Zurmi area, including providing information and technical assistance for the placement of improvised explosive devices. They are currently in military custody pending further investigation by the Department of State Services.

Further operations saw troops engaging terrorists near Tunga and Jambako villages in Maradun Local Government Area, where they encountered an ambush. While the troops forced the terrorists to withdraw, two tires of a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle were damaged by RPG fragments. No troop casualties were reported. Additionally, troops responded to an abduction report in Tsafe Local Government Area, where three residents were taken by fleeing terrorists towards Katsina State. Fighting patrols continue across the area of responsibility with heightened alert.
