Nine Dead in Mérida-Barinas Highway Bus Accident; Victims Identified

CARACAS: A tragic bus accident on the Mérida - Barinas highway has claimed the lives of nine individuals, prompting an extensive recovery and investigation effort by Venezuelan authorities. The bus, belonging to the Unión - Táchira line, overturned and plunged down a precipice in the Velo de la Novia sector of Mérida state.

Emergency services, including firefighters, Civil Protection, and the Scientific, Criminal, and Criminalistic Investigations Corps (Cicpc), have been working tirelessly since Saturday afternoon to locate and retrieve all victims. The challenging terrain has complicated the recovery operations, which continued into Sunday. Among the identified victims are the bus driver, Germán Altuve, and five other passengers, including musician José Rafael Saavedra. The identities of the remaining three deceased are still pending.
