North Jakarta residents transform plastic bottle waste into brooms

In Petukangan Utara, South Jakarta, a community initiative is transforming a common environmental problem into a source of income and utility. Residents of RT 05/02 have begun repurposing discarded plastic bottles, typically destined for landfills, into functional brooms.

The project, which has been underway for about five months, started with a "bottle charity" movement where neighbors voluntarily contributed their plastic bottles. This collective effort has grown to involve a diverse group of residents, including teenagers, mothers, and fathers, who are learning the process and experimenting with production.

Each broom is crafted from approximately 20 1.5-liter plastic bottles. The resulting products include both street brooms and mattress brooms, which are then sold for between Rp 25,000 and Rp 35,000. This endeavor not only helps reduce plastic waste but also provides a valuable supplementary income for the participating households.

The reach of these recycled brooms extends far beyond the local neighborhood. They are marketed through the online shopping platform Shopee, allowing them to be sold across Indonesia, including in major regions like Jabodetabek, Sumatra, Bali, and Sulawesi. This broad market access demonstrates the growing demand and viability of the product.

Saifulloh, the head of RT 05/02, expressed his hope that the brooms produced by the residents will be beneficial and widely used, potentially even by public utility workers across Jakarta. The initiative exemplifies how community creativity can turn waste into a valuable resource, fostering both environmental consciousness and economic opportunity.
