North Korean leader congratulates Russia on National Day, affirms strong ties

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has sent a congratulatory message to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Russia's National Day, signaling a deepening bond between the two nations. The message, reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), highlighted the growing ties and the aspiration for a comprehensive strategic alliance based on a treaty. Kim Jong Un expressed his commitment to "always stand together" with Moscow, underscoring the strategic partnership solidified during Putin's visit to Pyongyang in June 2024. This visit also saw the agreement to open a road bridge connecting the two countries, a project anticipated to significantly boost bilateral trade upon its expected completion on June 19. In addition to the leaders' exchange, Russian and North Korean officials participated in events commemorating Russia's National Day, including visits to memorials for Soviet Red Army soldiers. The Russian Embassy in Pyongyang hosted a reception for North Korean officials, further cementing the diplomatic engagement between the two states. This strengthening relationship comes as North Korea has reportedly sent thousands of soldiers to support Russia's operations in Ukraine.
