Norwegian ship accused of 'almost running over' boat that killed two in Sweden

A Norwegian cargo ship, the Misje Verde, is accused of "almost running over" a recreational boat from behind, leading to the deaths of two people in Sweden. Prosecutors believe the 7-8 meter recreational motorboat was "almost run over" by the larger Norwegian vessel, causing it to be sucked under and immediately fill with water before sinking.

The captain of the Norwegian ship was detained on Sunday, suspected of negligent causing of death. He has been in custody since Thursday evening. The Swedish Prosecution Authority stated that the detention is due to the risk of the captain absconding and hindering the investigation, noting he is a foreign national without residency in Sweden and works for a foreign shipping company.

The captain's defense lawyer, Taavi Tuula, told Swedish TV4 that the court's decision was not surprising given the risk of evasion. The captain denies any wrongdoing, but Tuula declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing investigation.

The incident occurred on July 28 in Tjörn. The recreational boat carried a couple in their 40s and their two children. The father and son were found quickly and are in stable condition despite serious injuries. The mother and daughter were initially reported missing and have since been found deceased. The recreational boat has been recovered from a depth of 20-30 meters. The Norwegian ship was initially seized by Swedish police but was allowed to leave the country on Friday. Its seven crew members were interviewed and stated they did not notice any collision.
