NSCDC arrests 19 suspected illegal miners in Edo

Nigeria’s civil defence corps says it arrested 19 suspected illegal miners after officers entered a forest in Edo North following surveillance of mining activity.

The arrests took place on Aug. 28 in the Okpella, Ososo and Egbetua forest axis, which covers Etsako East and Akoko-Edo local government areas. The NSCDC said its Mining Marshal Unit located the site despite difficult terrain, poor roads, hills and thick vegetation. Two other suspects escaped into the forest.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the group mined gold and worked for two alleged leaders, identified as a man known as “Area” and Abu Mawain. The NSCDC said 15 suspects allegedly worked for Area, while four worked for Mawain under the name Gravity Pillars Concept Ltd.

I wish to brief you on the recent operational breakthrough recorded by the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in its ongoing fight against illegal mining and the criminal exploitation of our natural resources.

Officers recovered a pumping machine, five head pans, 13 carpets or rugs, six shovels, 15 mobile phones, a power bank and four identity cards bearing the company’s name. Commander Saidi Akintayo said the arrested suspects had made statements admitting their involvement and would be charged after the investigation. The two alleged leaders remain at large.

Akintayo said the command would intensify operations across Edo State and seek not only workers at illegal mining sites, but also financiers, sponsors and others benefiting from the activity. He also credited Governor Monday Okpebholo with providing logistical and other support for the operation.

The NSCDC will not fold its arms and allow criminal elements to plunder the natural resources of Edo State, which are meant to contribute to the development of the state and the nation.
