Nurse performs CPR on collapsed man at funeral, hailed for quick action

A nurse has been lauded for her selfless act of providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to a man who collapsed at a funeral, an event she was attending to mourn her own grandmother. Nurse Ju Seol-hee, from Inje University Haeundae Paik Hospital, demonstrated remarkable composure and professionalism in a critical moment.

The incident occurred on July 20 at a funeral home in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province. CCTV footage captured the man, identified only as Mr. K, suddenly collapsing in the hallway. Mr. K had been suffering from arteriosclerosis, a condition where blood vessels narrow. He was attending a family funeral at the time of the collapse.

While bystanders were understandably shocked and distressed, Nurse Ju immediately approached Mr. K to assess his condition. Recognizing the need for immediate CPR, she instructed someone to call emergency services before commencing the life-saving procedure herself, all while wearing mourning attire.

It was a relief to hear that the family is doing well, and I felt grateful.

After Mr. K regained consciousness, Nurse Ju stayed by his side, monitoring his condition and providing reassurance. She also briefed the arriving paramedics on the situation and the emergency care she had administered. Even after completing her grandmother's funeral rites, she checked on Mr. K's well-being after he received treatment at the emergency room.

Witnesses who observed the event praised Nurse Ju's actions, noting her unwavering focus on the patient's life despite her own grief. Mr. K's family also reached out to express their profound gratitude, stating that without her timely intervention, the outcome could have been tragic. They shared that Mr. K has since recovered and they are able to proceed with planned family activities, emphasizing their deep appreciation for the nurse's life-saving efforts.
