Nurse's Death: Association Sues Minister Umahi, Demands Autopsy and N20 Billion Damages

A Nigerian association has initiated legal action against the Minister of Works, David Umahi, following the death of a nurse, Mary Habila, who was part of his medical team. The Incorporated Trustees of the Southern Kaduna Peoples’ United Association (SOKAPU) filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Kaduna, seeking justice for the nurse who reportedly died on June 27.

SOKAPU is demanding a court order compelling an autopsy to establish the precise cause of Habila's death. Furthermore, the association is claiming N20 billion in damages from Minister Umahi, alleging a breach of duty of care while the nurse was under his custody. The lawsuit also includes Habila Tanko Wisdom, the deceased's father, the Attorney-General of Ebonyi State, and the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police as respondents.

This legal move comes amid ongoing public attention and calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the nurse's death. Earlier reports indicated that the Ebonyi State Police Command intended to conduct an autopsy, despite alleged opposition from some family members. Minister Umahi himself had reportedly requested the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police to carry out an autopsy as part of the investigative efforts. The case is expected to address significant legal questions regarding duty of care, accountability, and the judicial process for determining the cause of death.
