NYSC Director-General Warns Corps Members Against Political Involvement Ahead of 2027 Elections

As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is taking proactive steps to ensure its members remain impartial and focused on national development. Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, the NYSC Director-General, has issued a clear directive to corps members, emphasizing the importance of staying away from partisan politics.

The 2027 general elections are around the corner, and you will be engaged by INEC as ad hoc staff. You must be good ambassadors of the NYSC and Nigeria whenever you serve as electoral officers.

Addressing Batch A, Stream II corps members at the orientation camp in Gusau, Zamfara State, Nafiu reminded them of their crucial role as ad hoc staff for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He stressed that their duty is to serve as good ambassadors of the NYSC and Nigeria, promoting national unity and cohesion rather than engaging in political activities, particularly on social media.

Beyond political neutrality, Nafiu also highlighted the significance of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program. He encouraged corps members to leverage this initiative to gain practical empowerment skills, develop multiple income sources, and avoid excessive spending. This focus on financial literacy and entrepreneurship aims to equip them for economic independence after their service year, reducing reliance on government jobs and fostering a culture of self-sufficiency within the youth demographic.
