OAU Explains Refusal to Host Peter Obi Lecture Due to Short Notice

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has clarified its decision to decline a request for a venue to host a lecture by Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. While Mr. Obi expressed concern over a perceived pattern of cancelled engagements and a threat to intellectual freedom, the university management insists its decision was purely a matter of protocol and safety.

The general public is hereby informed that a particular group within the Students’ body extended an invitation to the former presidential candidate and two-term governor of Anambra State to deliver a lecture within the University premises.

According to the university's Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the organizers failed to provide adequate details about the guest and the event until just one day prior. This short notice made it impossible for OAU to conduct the necessary security and logistical arrangements, which are crucial for hosting high-profile personalities. Such arrangements typically involve coordination with security agencies like the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS).

It is important to note that events involving high-profile personalities of such standing require adequate prior notification to the university authorities because it will enable the institution to make necessary logistical and security arrangements, including proper liaison with relevant security agencies such as the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), to ensure the safety of the guests, members of the university community and the general public.

The university emphasized that the refusal to approve the use of Oduduwa Hall was not a slight against Mr. Obi, whom they hold in high regard. Instead, it was a measure taken to ensure the safety of guests, the university community, and the general public, and to adhere to established protocols for facility use. This incident highlights the delicate balance universities must strike between fostering intellectual discourse and maintaining security and order.

Consequently, given the short notice and the attendant inability to complete these critical arrangements, the university authorities could not approve the use of Oduduwa Hall for the event as requested by the organisers.
