Obituary: A Lawyer Touched by Music

Pertti Ilkka Vilhelmi Karumo, a respected district judge, died in Pori on June 30, 2026, at the age of 84. Born in Pori on August 31, 1941, Karumo's path into law seemed destined, with legal professionals in his family.

After graduating from high school in 1960, he pursued law at the University of Helsinki. During his time in the capital, he was active in the Satakunta student nation, developed a passion for jazz, and eventually earned his law degree. His career included a period in a law firm before he was appointed to the Pori District Court, first as a city prosecutor and later as a legal counselor, a role that became a significant part of his professional life.

As a judge, Karumo was known for his fairness and integrity. He participated in various professional activities, including serving on the board of the Finnish Judges' Association. His involvement extended to civic life, where he held positions in the Pori Savings Bank, the Pori Merchant Foundation, the Pori Rotary Club, the Satakunta Literary Club, and the Old Porilaiset association.

Friends remember Karumo as a courteous and correct gentleman who didn't seek the spotlight. His creativity found expression not only in his professional life but also through his deep love for music. He was instrumental in establishing the Pori Jazz Festival and, from a young age, played the piano and was part of a church brass band. As an alto saxophonist, he was highly regarded, performing with the Pori Big Band and the traditional orchestra JaxSix. His musical contributions are also noted on the album "Ilkka Karumo-Seppo Terämaa Quintet". He also served on the board of Pori Jazz from its inception and played a key role in founding the Finnish Jazz Federation in 1966. Karumo also enjoyed golf well into his later years.
