Oborevwori flags off N29.8bn road, bridge project

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has initiated a significant infrastructure development project, the N29.8 billion Aboh-Akarai road and bridge project, in Ndokwa East Local Government Area. This undertaking underscores the administration's dedication to inclusive development, ensuring that even the most remote riverine and rural communities benefit from essential infrastructure. The project's focus on connectivity is expected to be a catalyst for economic renewal and a substantial improvement in the living standards of the residents.

The impetus for this project arose from a personal appeal by the Deputy Governor, who experienced firsthand the arduous journey to Akarai. This direct observation highlighted the critical need for improved access, transforming a promise into a tangible reality. The 11-kilometer stretch, from Aboh through Umuti to Akarai-Obodo and Akarai-Etiti, is being constructed with reinforced concrete pavement, a deliberate choice to ensure durability in the challenging, swampy terrain where traditional asphalt would falter.

He told me that approving the road would mean touching lives in the rural communities, and I immediately assured him that the project would be done. Today, that promise has become a reality.

This ambitious project includes a 140-meter multi-span bridge over the Okiri River and is engineered to be above the flood levels recorded in the devastating 2012 floods, guaranteeing year-round accessibility. Governor Oborevwori emphasized that this is more than just construction; it represents a commitment to overcoming developmental barriers. The road is anticipated to stimulate economic activity, attract investment, create jobs, and crucially, ease the movement of agricultural produce to markets, thereby transforming the lives of communities that have long relied on river transportation.

For many years, residents of these communities have depended largely on river transportation. But with the completion of this road, things will change for the better. Movement will become easier, farmers will transport their produce to markets faster, students will gain easier access to schools, patients will reach hospitals without stress, and families will remain connected even during the rainy season.
