Okpekpe Pays Nigerian Winners as Dunia-backed Prize Money Reaches Athletes

The Okpekpe International 10km Road Race has announced the completion of prize money payments to Nigerian winners of its 11th edition. This move addresses long-standing complaints from athletes regarding delayed payments after road races in the country.

Peter Dunia, a security expert and CEO of Oceanwaves, sponsored the prize money, which included three million naira for first place, two million for second, and one million for third in each gender category. The organizers stated that the public announcement aims to recognize Nigerian athletes and show their participation is valued. Nigerian runners in the event receive accommodation and recognition throughout the race.

Despite Nigerian athletes not yet reaching international elite standards, four runners broke 31 minutes at the 11th edition. Race Director Zack Amodu noted the significant improvement in Nigerian elite athletes' performances. He thanked Dunia and Oceanwaves for their sponsorship, highlighting how the company is helping to "secure the career of Nigerian road runners."

Amodu urged other individuals and companies to support Nigerian athletes, suggesting that increased investment could lead to international competitiveness, job creation, and encourage more young people to pursue sports. The Okpekpe race holds the distinction of being the first road race in West Africa to receive World Athletics label status and the first in the region with a course measured by an accredited measurer, establishing itself as a regional benchmark.
