Ondo Distributes Relief Materials to Flood Victims

Families affected by flooding in Ondo State’s riverine communities have received food, mattresses, blankets and other relief materials from the state government.

The recent downpour in Ilaje Local Government Area destroyed residents’ property. The relief distribution took place in Igbokoda, the local government headquarters, under the supervision of the Ondo State Emergency Management Agency.

Deputy Governor Olayide Adelami, represented by the agency’s secretary, Richard Aina, said the intervention aimed to ease the disaster’s impact. He urged people in flood-prone communities to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories, adding that the administration would continue to support residents affected by disasters.

I want to appeal to all residents of flood-prone communities to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories issued by relevant government agencies to minimise the risk of further loss of lives and property.

National Emergency Management Agency official Olanrewaju Kazeem said the distribution was intended to cushion the effects of the flood. He added that NEMA had conducted awareness activities before the exercise, educating beneficiaries about prevention, preparedness and appropriate responses during emergencies.

Ilaje Local Government Chairman Maurice Oripenaye said nearly 10,000 affected residents had registered for assistance. He said the local government secretariat itself remained submerged for almost a week, forcing workers to stay away temporarily. Adelami also urged residents to dispose of waste properly, keep drainage channels clear and avoid blocking natural waterways.
