Only Deeds Accompany a Person in the Grave, Explains Prophet Muhammad

In Islam, the transition from life to death marks a profound solitude, as all worldly possessions and even loved ones eventually depart. According to Islamic teachings, when the appointed time comes, individuals leave behind their status, wealth, and the company of those they held dear. Family members escort the deceased only to the grave, and material wealth becomes an inheritance for the living.

Following this separation, the individual enters the realm of the grave, known as barzakh, alone. The crucial question then arises: what or who remains as a faithful companion in this solitary journey? Islamic tradition, as explained by the Prophet Muhammad SAW, states that only one's deeds will remain.

If a person's deeds were righteous, they will experience comfort and pleasure in the grave until the Day of Resurrection. Conversely, if their deeds were wicked, they will face punishment in the grave, according to Allah's will. This concept is deeply rooted in Islamic theology and serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of living a life of faith and good conduct.

The explanation is supported by a sahih hadith narrated by Anas bin Malik RA. The Prophet Muhammad SAW said: "There are three things that accompany a deceased person. Two return, and one remains. His family, his wealth, and his deeds accompany him. His family and wealth return, but his deeds remain." This hadith is recorded in the authentic collections of both Imam al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim.

Imam Al-Qurthubi further elaborates on this in his book 'At-Tadzkirah fi Ahwal al-Mauta wa Umur al-Akhirah,' emphasizing that the grave is the initial stage of the journey toward the hereafter. The principle underscores the Islamic emphasis on accountability for one's actions in this life.
