Oriire Rescue Shows Gains From Security Coordination, Says Coalition

The successful rescue of 44 students and teachers abducted in Oriire, Oyo State, highlights improving coordination among Nigeria's security agencies, according to the Coalition of Civil Rights Groups on Security Sector Reforms (CCRGSR). The coalition stated that the operation, which concluded around July 10 after the victims were taken in May, demonstrates how enhanced collaboration between the military, police, and intelligence services yields better results against violent crime. Emmanuel Agabi, the coalition's National Coordinator, specifically lauded the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, for his coordination of the joint operation. Agabi also commended the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for fostering stronger cooperation across security agencies. The coalition noted the Nigeria Police Force's crucial role in providing ground support, investigative work, and community liaison, which contributed significantly to the successful rescue. Recent security operations nationwide have reportedly led to hostage rescues, the neutralization of bandit groups, and the recovery of arms and livestock, reflecting broader progress against criminal networks. While acknowledging these successes, the CCRGSR urged the government to sustain investment in modern equipment, intelligence gathering, personnel training, civil-military relations, and community policing. They also called for strengthening forensic investigations and partnerships with local vigilante and community security networks.
