OSIC Presents "En Viena" Concert Featuring Beethoven and Schubert

The National Congress Symphony Orchestra (OSIC) is set to present its sixth concert of the Official International Cycle 2026 this Thursday, August 13th. Titled "En Viena. The aria, the lied and the symphony," the program will showcase vocal and symphonic pieces rooted in Viennese musical tradition. The performance is scheduled for 8:00 PM at the Municipal Theater "Ignacio A. Pane" and offers free admission.

Under the baton of Maestro Diego Sánchez Haase, OSIC's principal conductor, the concert opens with Ludwig van Beethoven's "Ah, perfido," Op. 65. This scene and aria, set to Pietro Metastasio's text, was composed when Beethoven was 26. It portrays the monologue of a woman abandoned by her lover, moving through despair, accusation, and supplication. The work is notably linked to Beethoven's 1808 Viennese premiere, which also featured his Fifth and Sixth Symphonies.

Ah, perfido

The first half will continue with two well-known lieder by Franz Schubert: "Gretchen am Spinnrade" (Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel), D. 118, and "Erlkönig" (The Elf King), D. 328. These will be presented in orchestral arrangements by Franz Liszt. "Gretchen am Spinnrade," composed in 1814, musically interprets Gretchen's thoughts about Faust, based on a text by Goethe. "Erlkönig," also inspired by Goethe, presents a significant interpretive challenge, requiring a single singer to embody the narrator, father, child, and the supernatural Elf King.

The second half of the concert will be dedicated to Schubert's Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major, D. 485, written in 1816 when the composer was 19. Paraguayan soprano Jessica Bogado, who currently pursues her artistic career in Madrid, Spain, will perform as the soloist. Bogado's repertoire spans early and contemporary works, opera, zarzuela, and Spanish song, with notable recognition including the award for Best Spanish Song Interpreter at the Ciudad de Logroño Singing Competition.
