Osun Election: Adeleke campaign petitions NHRC, alleges police harassment ahead of Osun poll

The Adeleke Campaign Organisation has formally petitioned Nigeria's National Human Rights Commission, voicing serious concerns over alleged police misconduct and human rights abuses in Osun State. The petition comes as the state approaches a crucial governorship election, with the campaign seeking assurances of neutrality and professionalism from the Nigeria Police Force.

Pelumi Olajengbesi, spokesperson for the campaign, highlighted fears of misuse of police powers and a general atmosphere of insecurity. He specifically pointed to allegations of 36 deaths in the state, urging authorities to investigate these incidents and ensure justice. The campaign is also demanding a public commitment from the Inspector-General of Police to guarantee adequate security and uphold the credibility of the election.

We have come to the National Human Rights Commission to present our concerns over what we consider abuse of human rights in Osun State as the election approaches.

Further allegations include the unlawful arrest and detention of Osun residents. The campaign claims some detainees were released only after public outcry, while questioning the redeployment of the state's Commissioner of Police. A specific case cited involves the Accord Party candidate for Ijesa South, Popoola Alabama, who was allegedly arrested without incriminating items found on him and subsequently detained under court order for alleged firearm possession and robbery.

The Adeleke Campaign Organisation insists that individuals should be charged or released promptly and calls for the impartial conduct of all security agencies to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election in Osun State. As of the report's filing, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued a response to these allegations.
