Osun election: Winner will emerge through ballot - Amupitan

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has pledged that the upcoming August 15 governorship election in Osun State will be decided by the ballot, not by force.

INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan stated during a visit to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, that the election serves as a vital precursor to the 2027 general elections. He stressed the commission's commitment to ensuring the people's will, expressed through votes, determines the outcome. "The decision of who becomes the governor should not be decided by bullet but by the will of the people through their votes," Amupitan declared.

Acknowledging the heightened political tension in Osun, Amupitan assured that INEC is working closely with security agencies, including the police, the Minister of Defence, and service chiefs, to deploy special security measures. The goal is to guarantee a peaceful election, free from violence. Oba Oyetunji, in response, urged the commission to conduct a fair, free, and credible election, commending INEC's efforts thus far.
