Over 1,700 Kilos of Marijuana Found in Precarious Deposit on Itaipú Lake Shore

Authorities in Paraguay's Alto Paraná department have seized a significant quantity of marijuana during an anti-narcotics operation. Agents from the National Police's Antinarcotics Department discovered 1,767 kilograms of pressed marijuana and 13.3 kilograms of high-THC "premium bud" marijuana in the Mbaracayú district's Puerto Indio colony.

The discovery was made in an unfinished construction, lacking perimeter fencing, where the drugs were stored in polyethylene-wrapped bales. The operation, directed by specialized prosecutor Luis Fernando Escobar Boisville, found the site abandoned upon the agents' arrival. Suspects are believed to have fled into a nearby wooded area.

Sub-commissioner Manuel Ayala of the Antinarcotics Department stated that the seized marijuana, including vacuum-sealed packages of the premium variety, represents a substantial financial blow to criminal organizations, estimated at approximately 500 million Paraguayan guaranis. The drugs were transported to the Regional Base No. 10 for safekeeping due to the challenging terrain and potential dangers.

Puerto Indio's strategic location along the Itaipú lake's shore, close to the Brazilian border, makes it a key corridor for drug trafficking and smuggling operations. This area is frequently used to move contraband, particularly marijuana and Paraguayan cigarettes, into Brazil. Recent operations on the Brazilian side have also yielded significant drug seizures, highlighting the ongoing cross-border illicit trade.
