Over 30 government soldiers killed in Houthi attacks in Yemen, sources say

The Houthi militia has killed at least 30 Yemeni government soldiers in attacks targeting central and eastern Yemen, sources told news agencies AFP and AP. The assaults struck army camps in the provinces of Marib and Hadhramaut, with an additional 50 soldiers reported wounded, according to unnamed sources within the internationally recognized Yemeni government.

Health sector sources cited by AFP reported that at least 36 Yemeni soldiers died in the Houthi assaults. These attacks represent a significant escalation, occurring amidst a fragile ceasefire that has been in place since April 2022, which had previously halted the most intense hostilities in the country.

The Iran-aligned Houthi movement controls large swathes of Yemen. A civil war erupted in 2014 between the Houthis and the government, which is backed by Saudi Arabia. A Saudi-led coalition intervened on the government's side months later, deepening the conflict.
