Over 50 Malaysians Unaccounted For After Devastating Nepal Floods

More than 50 Malaysian nationals in Nepal are currently unaccounted for, with families unable to reach them after devastating flash floods struck the region. The severe weather event has also left hundreds of local residents and other foreign nationals missing, compounding the crisis.

Mohd Firdaus Azman, the Chargé d'Affaires at the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu, confirmed the situation, stating that the embassy is actively collecting information. "We are still gathering information on Malaysians who cannot be contacted," he told Bernama. Road access to the most affected areas has been severely disrupted due to flooding of the Bhote Koshi River, prompting the Nepalese government to deploy helicopters for search and rescue missions.

Communication infrastructure has also been damaged, making it difficult to obtain updates. The Malaysian Embassy has provided an email address ([email protected]) for individuals seeking to locate relatives or friends, requesting passport and travel details for coordination. The death toll from the floods has tragically risen to over 160 people as of Wednesday night, with hundreds more, including tourists and Nepalese security personnel, still missing.

The floods, triggered by what appears to be a glacial lake outburst flood or debris flow, have caused widespread destruction, washing away villages and bridges. The disaster has also impacted neighboring China, with reports of deaths and missing persons there. India has dispatched aid to Nepal, highlighting the international dimension of the disaster response.
