Pakistan Issues Glof Alert for Northern Regions Amidst Approaching Westerly Wave

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a critical alert regarding the imminent threat of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (Glofs) in the upper regions of Pakistan, specifically Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. An approaching westerly wave is expected to bring widespread rain and thunderstorms, significantly increasing the risk of these sudden, destructive floods. Glofs, which involve the rapid release of water and debris from glacial lakes, pose a severe danger to mountain communities, threatening lives, property, and livelihoods. Over 7.1 million people in these vulnerable areas are at risk. The PMD's advisory urges residents in glaciated valleys to exercise extreme caution, advising them to stay away from riverbanks, secure their livestock and belongings, and actively disseminate the alert. Coordination with Community Based Disaster Risk Management Committees and round-the-clock alertness from disaster management authorities are paramount. This warning underscores Pakistan's extreme vulnerability to climate change impacts, with a vast number of glaciers already receding due to rising global temperatures.
