Panama Details Future Caimito Wastewater Plant Amidst Growing Population Needs

Panama's Ministry of Health is moving forward with plans for the Caimito Wastewater Treatment Plant, a significant infrastructure project designed to serve the rapidly growing population of Panama Oeste. The ministry recently held a technical consultation and market survey, gathering representatives from the private sector, interested companies, and multilateral organizations to present the project's scope and collect feedback before the formal prequalification process begins.

This future plant is crucial for enhancing wastewater treatment capacity in a region experiencing sustained population growth. Officials state the infrastructure will contribute to proper wastewater management, thereby reducing health risks and safeguarding the province's water sources. Health Minister Fernando Boyd Galindo emphasized that sanitation projects are integral to public health strategies, playing a key role in preventing diseases linked to inadequate wastewater handling.

The consultation phase, led by the Sanitation Program of Panama, allowed teams to explain the project's general characteristics and address participant queries. Program coordinator María Fernanda de Mendoza clarified that this stage is not part of the bidding process but an exercise to gather input from potential participants and financial backers. She also noted that current sewer system construction in Arraiján and La Chorrera will connect to the new treatment facility.

The Caimito Wastewater Treatment Plant will receive joint financing from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), CAF, Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). Representatives from these organizations attended the consultation, alongside companies keen to understand the technical and administrative details before the international prequalification phase officially commences.
