Panama: Foreign national detained in alleged embezzlement case

A foreign national is in provisional detention in Panama after the Superior Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office charged her with aggravated embezzlement, allegedly causing significant economic damage to the state. The woman was apprehended at Tocumen International Airport as part of "Operation Cimiento Cero," a broader investigation into corruption.

The investigation, supported by the National Police's Judicial Investigation Directorate, links the accused to a case that reportedly caused a financial loss of $612,029.07 to the National Council for Sustainable Development (Conades). The case involves alleged irregularities in a social interest project designed to construct 892 sanitary units for communities in Macaracas, Guararé, and Los Santos.

During the hearings, the prosecution presented evidence supporting the charges and requested provisional detention, which the Court of Guarantees granted.
