Panama gears up to celebrate a century of defending the Spanish language

The Spanish language, a dynamic entity that evolves with society, is undergoing transformations in meaning, expression, and usage. In this context, Panama is set to commemorate a significant milestone: 100 years of the Panamanian Academy of Language's dedication to fostering the study and correct application of Spanish.

Jorge Ritter, director of the Academy, highlights Panama's unique contribution to the richness of the Spanish language through its distinct expressions and vocabulary. He notes that the country's regional diversity is reflected in its various terms and the way people refer to themselves from different provinces. However, the evolution of language presents challenges, particularly for younger generations navigating digital communication platforms.

Specialists express concern over the transformation of writing styles among youth, characterized by abbreviated words and a lack of accents, which can bleed from informal online communication into more formal contexts. Irina de Ardila, director of the Cervantes Institute, emphasizes that mastering the language is more than an academic subject; it is a fundamental tool for learning and understanding all aspects of life. She warns that difficulties in reading and expressing oneself can hinder learning in other subjects.

As Panama celebrates its linguistic heritage, it also looks toward the future. The country is preparing to host the International Spanish Language Congress in 2028, an event that will bring together global discussions on the language. Amidst the constant evolution, the rise of artificial intelligence presents new challenges and questions regarding the responsible use of language in an increasingly digital world.
