Panama's Colon Province Sees Surge in New HIV Cases

Panama's Colon Province is grappling with a significant increase in new HIV cases in 2026, with 36 infections already reported. This figure is rapidly approaching the 43 cases recorded throughout all of 2025, prompting serious concern among health authorities regarding the ongoing spread of the virus.

The latest statistics reveal that two adolescents are among those diagnosed this year. The primary age group affected remains individuals between 20 and 40 years old. Dr. Andrea Díaz of the Ministry of Health's Antiretroviral Clinic in Colon highlighted that the neighborhoods of Cristóbal, Cristóbal Este, and Cativá continue to report the highest number of cases.

In response to this worrying trend, health officials are urging the public to intensify prevention efforts and raise awareness about the risks associated with sexually transmitted infections. Dr. Díaz emphasized the crucial role of condom use during sexual relations as a primary method to reduce the transmission of HIV and other STIs. She also noted the ongoing identification of cases among young people aged 15 to 19, underscoring the need to strengthen education and prevention strategies from an early age.

Eduardo Robinson from Probisida stressed the importance of early detection through HIV testing, encouraging individuals to get tested at Ministry of Health facilities or through Probisida. Prompt diagnosis, he explained, is vital for accessing necessary treatment and medical follow-up, as well as for implementing measures to prevent further transmission. The Antiretroviral Clinic in Colon currently provides care to approximately 1,300 people living with HIV, offering them comprehensive medical treatment and support.
