Panel to explore realities of war correspondence: 'Witness to Chaos'

War correspondents venture into areas the world often avoids, bringing back not just images of conflict but also profound human stories of fear, suffering, and the fight for survival. A panel discussion, 'Witness to Chaos: What a Correspondent Really Sees,' aims to shed light on the realities beyond the headlines and the ethical quandaries faced by reporters in war zones.

The discussion will delve into the power of their testimony in an information-saturated world and how to approach sensitive topics that people often choose to ignore. The event is moderated by Magdalena M. Baran, editor-in-chief of the Liberte! Foundation, and will include insights from journalists and photographers like Anna Alboth, Mads Nissen, Ron Haviv, Zbigniew Parafianowicz, and Piotr Kaszuwara.

A central figure at the forum will be Mads Nissen, a globally recognized war photographer celebrated for his impactful work. Nissen has won the prestigious World Press Photo award three times and has been a finalist nine times for the Picture of the Year competition. His extensive portfolio includes critically acclaimed series documenting dramatic social and war-related issues from around the world.

Nissen's powerful images have graced the covers of major political and social publications, often shaping public perception of complex issues. His notable series cover subjects such as homophobia in Russia, the challenges of South Sudan, gang violence in Cape Town, the Libyan revolution, overpopulation in the Philippines, the Ebola crisis, Brazil's struggles with disease, Arctic outposts, and the war in Ukraine. An exhibition of his work will be presented at the 35th Economic Forum in Karpacz, Poland, starting September 8.
