Paraguayan Senator Mocks Rival's Political Acumen Amidst Campaign Dispute

Senator Javier Zacarías Irún has responded to businessman José Ortiz's exclusion of the Zacarías political clan from the campaign for Ciudad del Este's mayoral candidate, Rigoberto Chamorro. Irún, a prominent figure in the Colorado Party, described Ortiz as an "excellent blacksmith" but suggested he lacks a deep understanding of Paraguayan politics and the specific sentiments within the Colorado Party in Ciudad del Este.

"José Ortiz as a politician is an excellent blacksmith, respecting the profession of the blacksmith. I cannot argue with someone who is not of our political class. He is a person who does not know the political party idiosyncrasy and much less knows what the Colorados of Ciudad del Este think and feel," Irún stated in an interview. He added that while he respects Ortiz's opinion, he does not share it, nor do many party leaders in Ciudad del Este.

Ortiz, who is closely aligned with former President Horacio Cartes, had previously asserted that the Zacarías family would not be included in Chamorro's campaign or a potential ANR administration. This decision reportedly stems from public rejection of the clan, with Ortiz claiming citizens are "fed up with them." The Zacarías clan, which includes the director of Itaipú, his wife, a deputy, and Senator Irún himself, had backed a different candidate in the municipal primaries.
