Pertamina Hulu Rokan Eyes 2,000 BPD Production Boost from New Well

PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR) has announced a promising initial production potential of 2,035 barrels of oil per day from its Menggala South-21 well, located within the Rokan Block. This discovery underscores the substantial untapped potential residing within the existing fields of the Rokan Block.

Initial production tests revealed the well's high-quality crude oil, evidenced by a zero water cut. This finding is a testament to the successful execution of drilling programs by the PHR team, who managed to achieve this significant production increase safely and efficiently. Andre Wijanarko, General Manager of Zona Rokan, highlighted the achievement as a result of the team's hard work.

The Menggala South-21 well, a directional J-type infill well, targets the Menggala Formation reservoir at a depth of approximately 4,146 feet. Drilling commenced in June 2026 and concluded on July 19, 2026. Despite facing technical challenges such as long open hole sections, potential shale sloughing, loss circulation, fault crossings, and differential sticking risks, the company completed the operation through meticulous planning and execution.

Remarkably, PHR finished drilling the well nine percent ahead of schedule and realized a cost efficiency of 44 percent. The operation, utilizing the GW-337 550 HP Electric Rig, proceeded without any safety incidents. This success reinforces the prospects for field development in the Menggala area and beyond, with PHR committed to further subsurface evaluations and optimization efforts to boost national oil production.
