Peruvian Police Commander Crashes into Traffic Agent's Motorcycle, Insults Officer During Intervention

An incident involving a high-ranking National Police of Peru (PNP) commander has again cast a shadow over the institution's image. Commander Manuel Antonio Canales Moscoso engaged in a heated confrontation with a traffic officer after driving his vehicle into the exclusive Metropolitano bus lane and colliding with the officer's motorcycle.

The altercation occurred in the San Martín de Porres district. According to reports and video footage, the traffic agent requested Canales Moscoso to present his identification and driver's license. The commander vehemently refused, re-entered his vehicle, and proceeded to hurl insults and dismissive remarks at the officer. He asserted he had an emergency and demanded the agent speak more clearly, while also implying his rank afforded him special status.

This is not the first time Commander Canales Moscoso has faced scrutiny. In 2016, he was detained for allegedly firing a weapon at a young man playing basketball outside his home in Los Olivos, reportedly while intoxicated. Although he was dismissed from the force for this incident, a court ruling in 2023 allowed his reinstatement with his previous rank.

In response to the recent incident, the PNP announced that its General Inspectorate has initiated an administrative disciplinary investigation. Commander Canales Moscoso has been placed on temporary suspension from duty while the investigation determines his responsibility. The PNP has publicly condemned any acts of indiscipline or conduct that could damage the institution's reputation and prestige.
