Peruvian Police Commander Sentenced to 8 Years for Invading Bus Lane

A high-ranking officer within Peru's National Police has been handed an eight-year prison sentence for resisting an official intervention. Police Commander Manuel Antonio Canales Moscoso, 57, was convicted of disobedience and resisting authority after he refused to be stopped for illegally occupying a restricted bus lane.

The incident took place in May when Canales was observed driving his private vehicle in the exclusive Metropolitano bus lane in the San Martín de Porres district. According to the Third Provincial Prosecutor's Office of Flagrancy Crimes in Lima Norte, officers attempted to stop him after noticing he was using his phone while driving in the restricted area near the Parque del Trabajo station.

During the oral trial, provincial prosecutor Beatriz Monroy Castillo argued that the convicted man disobeyed the legitimate orders issued by the intervening officer and claimed to be a commander while resisting compliance.

During the confrontation, Canales reportedly invoked his position as commander, refusing to comply with the officers' legitimate orders. Prosecutors stated that he also made demeaning remarks, deliberately undermining the principle of authority. This defiance led to his immediate arrest.

The prosecution presented key evidence, including the intervention report, testimonies from the officers involved, video transcriptions, and a police technical inspection, to secure the conviction. The prosecutor's office highlighted the swiftness of the legal process, noting that the sentence was obtained within three months due to the approval of an immediate trial process and a four-month pre-trial detention order against Canales.

In addition to the prison term, Canales has been ordered to pay S/5,000 in civil damages to the state. The case underscores the legal consequences for public officials who abuse their authority and disregard traffic regulations.
