Pet Snake Found on Taipei Metro Train; Awaiting Owner or New Home

An unusual passenger caused a stir on Taipei's MRT Bannan Line yesterday when a live pet snake was found slithering on a train seat. The incident, a first for the Taipei Metro system, quickly captured public attention, with some humorously dubbing the serpent Taipei's 'rodent detective'.

Fortunately, the snake was identified as a harmless 'rat snake' by the Taipei City Animal Protection Office (APO). Metro security personnel safely removed the reptile from the train and handed it over to the APO for temporary shelter. The office has since listed the snake on its official website under the 'Shelter and Rescue' section, initiating a 10-day period for its owner to come forward and claim it.

This unique situation highlights the responsibilities that come with pet ownership, especially in a densely populated urban environment like Taipei. The APO has outlined a clear process for reclaiming the pet, requiring the owner to provide detailed descriptions of the snake's appearance and characteristics, along with proof of ownership, such as past photos or documentation. A daily animal care fee will also be levied from the date of the announcement.

Should the owner not be identified by May 18th, the rat snake will be made available for public adoption. Prospective adopters will need to meet specific requirements, including completing designated online courses on pet health and animal protection laws, and providing a valid ID. This measure ensures that the snake will find a responsible and informed new home, underscoring the APO's commitment to animal welfare.
